News | 2014 | 2014 Reading List

Fifty-two published books in 2014. By my math, that works out to one book per week. Okay, I didn't read them one per week, but it is nice sometimes when the math is elegant. My favourites this year include Douglas Coupland's JPod, Nancy Farmer's The Sea of Trolls, and Jonas Jonasson's The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. Coupland is funny and rude and scattered and inspired and hilarious. Farmer wove a great story with (as much as I can tell) fairly solid research, which blended history and mythology in a very satisfying way. I was introduced to Jonasson's work one day by walking into a bookstore lost and overwhelmed. The clerk who came to my rescue suggested Jonasson, and now, because of her, I can never look at circus elephants the same way again.
