News | 2008 | January Blenz Reading Recap: Special Guest Oana Avasilichioaei

The first Blenz Reading of 2008 was certainly a memorable event, and if you weren't there, you missed a really good show. Not only did we have our special guest, Oana Avasilichioaei, come from Montreal to share her poetry and her translations of the Romanian poet Nichita Stanescu, we also had five readers from either SFU's The Writer's Studio or UBC's MFA program. And to top it all off, we were introduced to the new host of the Blenz Reading Series, Jane Mellor.

We filled the coffee shop with 35 people, and the energy in the room last night was high. We heard stories of future ghosts, adventures in Africa, and homecomings in Israel, as well as poetry about exploring new places and respecting ourselves. Thank you so much to everyone for making this evening a success.

January's readers were:

  • John Mavin (TWS 2006)
  • Carmen Pintea
  • Fiona Scott (TWS 2007)
  • Jonina Kirton (TWS 2007)
  • Ayelet Tsabari (TWS 2007)

and of course, our special guest from Montreal, Oana Avasilichioaei.

I should also mention that last night was my last Blenz Reading as host, and I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making my year as Blenz Host so memorable and fun. Thank you. I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many new and emerging writers and hearing their work grow and seeing them gain confidence with sharing their words in public. It's been absolutely terrific. As I've mentioned, Jane Mellor will be taking over as the new Blenz host in February, and I ask you all to give her the same understanding and support you gave me when I started out.
